Research focus of the group “Heat Transfer Engineering”
The research activities of the group focus on studying and describing the connections between heat transfer performance and the underlying mechanisms with a special attention to the processes at interfaces. For the example of condensation, the interplay between the properties of the solid condensation wall, the liquid condensate and the gaseous vapor needs consideration for determining the occuring condensation form and the steps of heat transfer through the individual sections of the complete system. In the macroscopic contact situation of two solid bodies, the total heat flow is made up by contributions at the actual contact points of the solids as well as through the fluid in voids formed between the solid surfaces exhibiting a certain roughness. Considering influencing factors such as wettability in terms of contact angles, the thermophysical properties of the involved fluids and solids as well as their surface properties is the key of getting access to accurate heat transfer coefficients describing how efficiently a given driving temperature difference can be converted into a heat flux in specific situations, which is pursued using advanced experimental and modeling methods.
